Job ad

Definition

A job ad (job advertisement) is the public announcement an employer publishes to attract applicants for an open role - the same object called a job posting or job listing in American usage. One vacancy typically produces several ads across careers sites, job boards, and aggregators.

Also called: job advertisement, job advert, online job advertisement, OJA.

Key points

  • A job ad is the published advertisement for an open role - identical to a job posting; the terms differ by dialect, not meaning.
  • A vacancy is the underlying unfilled role; one vacancy typically produces several ads through syndication and reposting.
  • Counting ads without deduplication overstates hiring demand - collapsing ads into vacancies is the field's core data problem.
  • Job ads are the fastest posting-level signal of labour demand, ahead of survey-based official statistics by weeks.

Job ad vs job posting: one object, two dialects

'Job ad' and 'job posting' name the same thing. British and European usage - and the labour-market research world, where the EU's skills agency Cedefop analyzes 'online job advertisements' (OJAs) - says ad or advert. American job boards and HR tech standardized on posting or listing. Someone who says they work with job ad data almost certainly comes from the European or research side of the industry; the underlying data is identical.

The vocabulary that does carry a real distinction is vacancy (also opening or requisition): the underlying unfilled role that ads advertise. Official statistics such as the US JOLTS series measure vacancies via employer surveys; job ad datasets measure the advertisements themselves. The two counts differ, and knowing which one a number refers to is the first sanity check in any job-market analysis.

One vacancy, many ads

A single unfilled role routinely generates several ads: the employer's ATS publishes it to the careers page, syndicates it to LinkedIn and Indeed, aggregators re-index it from both, staffing agencies repost it with the client anonymized, and the employer may repost weeks later to refresh its search ranking. Counting ads without collapsing them overstates hiring demand by the market's syndication multiple.

That is why deduplication is the core technical step between raw job ads and usable data: matching ads by employer, title, and location across sources, keeping the richest text, and tracking liveness so filled or expired roles leave the count. An ad is also not a job description - the description is the internal HR document; the ad is the external marketing artifact built from it, and the 'description' field in any jobs API is the ad's public text.

Job ads as data

Deduplicated and tracked over time, job ads are the fastest public signal of labour demand available: posting-level detail on what employers want, where, at what pay, requiring which skills - published the day the need becomes real, weeks ahead of any survey-based statistic. Skills research, wage analysis, regional demand mapping, and commercial labour-market intelligence are all built on this layer.

Working with job ads as data starts with collection at the source - job boards and ATS platforms - rather than reselling aggregator feeds, which is also what determines whether description text arrives complete or truncated. JobsPipe exposes that layer as an API: ads collected directly from 30+ sources, deduplicated into one record per role, with liveness status.

FAQ

Is a job ad the same as a job posting?+

Yes. Job ad (or advert) is the British, European, and research-world term; job posting or listing is the American and tech-industry term. They refer to the same published announcement of an open role. The EU research field formalizes it as 'online job advertisement' (OJA).

What is the difference between a job ad and a vacancy?+

The vacancy is the unfilled role; the job ad is an advertisement for it. One vacancy usually produces several ads - on the employer's careers page, on job boards it syndicates to, and in agency reposts. Ad counts and vacancy counts are different numbers, which is why serious analysis deduplicates ads back into vacancies before counting.

What is the difference between a job ad and a job description?+

The job description is the internal HR document defining duties, responsibilities, and reporting lines. The job ad is the external marketing version built from it - shorter, applicant-facing, and including the employer pitch. When a jobs API returns a description field, it contains the ad's public text, not the internal document.

Where can I get job ad data?+

From the sources directly (individual job boards and public ATS endpoints), from bulk dataset vendors, or through a jobs API that collects and deduplicates across sources. The main evaluation criteria are coverage, freshness, whether descriptions are complete or truncated, and whether deduplication and liveness tracking are built in.
