Why Use an Applicant Tracking System?
Why use an applicant tracking system? One record per candidate, one posting sent to every board, the audit trail the law expects and pipeline reports.

Why use an applicant tracking system? Because hiring beyond a handful of roles breaks email and spreadsheets. An ATS gives every candidate one record, publishes a posting to the careers page and the job boards in one step, keeps the audit trail employment law expects, and reports on the pipeline so hiring managers can see where roles stall.
Why applicant tracking systems are important to employers
- One pipeline. Candidates, stages, interview feedback, scorecards and offers live in one place. Nobody loses a resume in an inbox, two interviewers stop asking the same questions, and a candidate who applied last year can be found again. The record follows the candidate across every role they apply to.
- Distribution. Post once and the system syndicates to LinkedIn, Indeed and niche boards through built-in integrations, while the public careers page is generated from the same record. Closing the role removes it everywhere at once.
- Compliance and records. US federal contractors face applicant recordkeeping obligations, EU employers must handle candidate data under GDPR retention rules, and every employer benefits from a consistent, documented process if a hiring decision is challenged. An ATS produces those records as a side effect of use.
- Structured screening. Knockout questions, standard scorecards and defined stages make evaluation consistent across interviewers, which is both fairer and easier to defend.
- Reporting. Time to fill, source of hire, funnel conversion by stage and offer acceptance come out of the same data. Without a system, those numbers are guesses, and they are exactly what a hiring plan or a board deck asks for.
- Integrations. HRIS handoff on hire, background checks, e-signature, scheduling and assessments plug into the ATS rather than into each recruiter’s workflow. The patterns are in the ATS integration glossary entry.
How many applicant tracking systems are there? Hundreds of vendors worldwide, once you count regional products and the recruiting modules inside HR suites, but a much smaller group carries most of the postings you will meet: Workday, SAP SuccessFactors and Oracle at the enterprise end, Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, SmartRecruiters and Workable in the mid-market and startup range, plus payroll-attached systems such as Paylocity. JobsPipe collects the public boards of seven of those: Workday, Greenhouse, Workable, SmartRecruiters, Ashby, Lever and Paylocity. The per-system pages are listed on the sources page, and the reason to read them together is on the ATS job aggregator page.
Where JobsPipe fits
JobsPipe is a jobs data API that collects live postings from LinkedIn, Indeed, Y Combinator, Naukri, Workday, Greenhouse, Workable, SmartRecruiters, Ashby, Lever and Paylocity, returns them as one schema with closure tracking and a ghost score, and includes a free tier of 1,000 jobs a month. The distribution step above is where an ATS meets the outside world: the public board each system publishes is what JobsPipe reads, and each row names its system in sources[0].provider. A single request with source_or set to the systems you care about returns their postings in one shape, with status and closed_at reflecting the moment the recruiter closed the role.
Read seven applicant tracking systems through one API - free tier included.

Why is an applicant tracking system important?
It is the system of record for hiring. Every candidate gets one record, postings go out to the careers page and job boards from one place, interview feedback and offers are logged, and the audit trail that employment law and internal fairness both expect is produced automatically. Reporting on time to fill and source of hire comes from the same data.
How many applicant tracking systems are there?
Hundreds of vendors worldwide, counting regional products and the recruiting modules inside HR suites. A much smaller group carries most postings: Workday, SAP SuccessFactors and Oracle at the enterprise end, and Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, SmartRecruiters and Workable below it. JobsPipe collects the public boards of seven systems.
Does a small company need an applicant tracking system?
Once it runs more than a few open roles at a time, yes. Below that, a shared inbox and a spreadsheet work until the first lost candidate or the first dispute over who said what. Several ATS vendors offer free or low-cost tiers for small teams, and the public job board comes with them.
