Why Do Jobs Ghost You?
Why do jobs ghost you? Mostly volume, silent ATS rejections, paused or filled roles and hiring freezes. How to tell whether the posting was ever real.

Why do jobs ghost you? Usually because nobody was assigned to reply. High application volume, applicant tracking systems that reject without a notice, roles that were paused, filled internally or caught in a hiring freeze, and recruiters who moved on all produce the same silence. Less often, the posting was never a live opening at all.
Why jobs ghost you, from most to least common
- Volume. A posting on a large board can draw far more applicants than a recruiter can answer. Most applicant tracking systems can send a rejection email, but many employers never configure one, so the default outcome of not advancing is silence.
- Knockout questions and minimum criteria. Work authorisation, location, a licence or a years-of-experience threshold can reject an application before anyone reads it. Nothing is sent unless the employer set up a message for that path.
- The role changed. It was paused for budget, filled by an internal candidate, moved to a different level or folded into a hiring freeze. The posting often stays live for weeks after the decision, so applicants keep arriving to a closed door.
- Recruiter turnover and agency listings. When a recruiter leaves, the pipeline is orphaned until someone inherits it. Agency reposts collect resumes for a client that may have already hired, or may not exist yet.
- Evergreen and pipeline postings. Some employers keep a role open continuously to build a bench. Legitimate, but nobody is hired against a specific opening, and replies come only when a seat opens.
- The genuinely fake posting. Rare but real: signalling growth, keeping a budget line alive, or collecting resumes. This is the ghost job in the strict sense, and it is the least common reason for silence. The definition is in what are ghost jobs.
From the posting side, JobsPipe records three things that separate these cases. Every posting carries a status of active or closed, a closed_reason when it closes, and a ghost_score from 0 to 100 built from warning signs. Here is how often each sign appears on scored active postings:
- No salary stated66.9%
- Posted by a mass poster (500+ open roles)19.2%
- Reposted (seen again after a gap of 10+ days)7.3%
- Posted date far behind first sighting5.8%
- Open for 45 days or more1.4%
- Thin description (under 400 characters)1.3%
Being ghosted after applying does not mean the job was a ghost job. Across all boards, 28.6% of active postings have been open for more than 30 days, and most of those are slow searches rather than fake ones. The wider picture is in why are there so many ghost jobs, and you can check a single posting on the ghost jobs page.
Where JobsPipe fits
JobsPipe is a jobs data API that collects live postings from LinkedIn, Indeed, Y Combinator, Naukri, Workday, Greenhouse, Workable, SmartRecruiters, Ashby, Lever and Paylocity, returns them as one schema with closure tracking and a ghost score, and includes a free tier of 1,000 jobs a month. Job boards, career tools and agents use max_ghost_score and posted_at_max_age_days to keep stale and reposted openings out of what they show, and status with closed_at to tell an applicant when a role actually came down.
Show applicants postings that are still open - 1,000 jobs a month free.

Is being ghosted a sign the job was a ghost job?
Usually not. Silence after applying is most often volume, an unconfigured rejection email, a knockout rule or a role that was paused or filled. A ghost job in the strict sense, a posting with no intention to hire, is the least common cause. A posting that keeps reappearing after gaps, or whose posted date sits far behind its first sighting, is the better tell.
How long should I wait before assuming I was ghosted?
Two to three weeks after applying with no acknowledgement is normal on large boards; after an interview, one to two weeks past the date the recruiter gave is the point to follow up once. Check whether the posting is still live before drawing a conclusion: a role that has closed explains the silence.
Can I tell whether a posting is still open?
Yes. On the JobsPipe API every posting carries status (active or closed), closed_at, closed_reason and a ghost_score from 0 to 100 with the warning signs behind it. The ghost jobs page on jobspipe.dev checks a single posting, and max_ghost_score filters a search to postings that look live.
