# What MCP Servers Are Available?

What MCP servers are available? Reference servers, vendor servers from GitHub, Cloudflare, Stripe and Sentry, docs servers and data servers like JobsPipe.

What MCP servers are available? More than anyone can list, and they fall into a few categories: reference servers maintained in the MCP project, official servers from vendors such as GitHub, Cloudflare, Stripe and Sentry, documentation servers such as Context7, and data servers such as JobsPipe. Some run on your machine over stdio; others are hosted at a URL.

## What MCP servers are available, by category

1. **Reference servers.** The `modelcontextprotocol/servers` repository maintains small servers that demonstrate the protocol: Filesystem, Fetch, Git, Memory, Sequential Thinking and Time, plus an Everything server used for testing clients. They run locally over stdio, launched with `npx` or `uvx`, and they are the fastest way to see a client work.
2. **Developer platforms.** GitHub ships an official server for issues, pull requests and code search, available hosted and as a local container. Microsoft’s Playwright MCP drives a browser from an agent. Cloudflare publishes a set of hosted servers covering its documentation, account resources and observability data.
3. **SaaS and payments.** Stripe offers a hosted server plus a local package for reading and managing account objects. Sentry’s hosted server exposes issues, traces and projects. Both authenticate with OAuth or an API key, handled once at connection time.
4. **Documentation.** Context7 serves current, version-specific library documentation to the model on request, hosted or local, so an agent stops guessing at an API it half remembers.
5. **Data servers.** JobsPipe runs at `https://mcp.jobspipe.dev/mcp` over Streamable HTTP with four tools: `search_jobs`, `detect_company_tech_stack`, `list_pricing_plans` and `search_documentation`. Any client that speaks MCP can query live postings through it.
6. **Where to find more.** The MCP project runs an official registry, and each client keeps a directory: the connectors list in Claude, Cursor’s MCP directory and the server list in VS Code. Vendor servers are usually documented on the vendor’s own developer pages before they reach any registry.

Where are MCP servers hosted? Either on your machine or on the vendor’s. A local server is a process the client launches, talking over stdin and stdout; it has whatever access the user has, which is why filesystem and git servers are local. A hosted server is a URL that speaks Streamable HTTP, like `https://mcp.jobspipe.dev/mcp`; you paste the URL into the client and sign in. Hosted is the right shape for anything backed by an API with accounts and keys.

What is an MCP server in VS Code? The same thing, configured in the editor. VS Code reads a `.vscode/mcp.json` file with a `servers` key, each entry giving a `type` and either a `url` or a `command`; the exact shape has changed between releases, so check the current VS Code documentation if a field is rejected. Once listed, the tools appear in agent mode next to the built-in ones.

## Where JobsPipe fits

JobsPipe is a jobs data API that collects live postings from LinkedIn, Indeed, Y Combinator, Naukri, Workday, Greenhouse, Workable, SmartRecruiters, Ashby, Lever and Paylocity, returns them as one schema with closure tracking and a ghost score, and includes a free tier of 1,000 jobs a month. Its hosted server, documented at [jobspipe.dev](https://jobspipe.dev), is one entry in VS Code:

```
{
  "servers": {
    "jobspipe": { "type": "http", "url": "https://mcp.jobspipe.dev/mcp" }
  }
}
```

Setup for Claude, Cursor and ChatGPT is on the [MCP server page](/mcp-server), the concepts are in [what is an MCP server](/blog/what-is-an-mcp-server), and building your own is in [how to build an MCP server](/blog/how-to-build-an-mcp-server).

Add a live jobs data server to your MCP client in one line - free tier included.

FAQs

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Where are MCP servers hosted?

Either on your machine or at a vendor's URL. Local servers are launched by the client as a subprocess and talk over stdin and stdout, which suits filesystem, git and browser tools. Hosted servers speak Streamable HTTP at a URL, like https://mcp.jobspipe.dev/mcp, and you paste the URL into the client and sign in. Anything backed by an API with accounts is usually hosted.

### What is an MCP server in VS Code?

A server the editor's agent mode can call. VS Code reads a .vscode/mcp.json file with a servers key, each entry giving a type and either a url for a hosted server or a command for a local one. The file's exact shape has changed between releases, so check the current VS Code documentation if a field is rejected. Once configured, the server's tools appear next to the built-in ones.

### Are there official MCP servers from vendors?

Yes. GitHub, Cloudflare, Stripe and Sentry each publish their own, most of them hosted, and the MCP project maintains reference servers for the filesystem, git, fetch, memory and time. JobsPipe's server exposes search\_jobs, detect\_company\_tech\_stack, list\_pricing\_plans and search\_documentation. Vendor developer pages are the reliable place to find the current URL and auth method.
