What Does It Mean When a Job Posting Is Reposted?
What does it mean when a job posting is reposted? Often a listing expired or an ATS refreshed it; sometimes a hire fell through or the role is evergreen.

What does it mean when a job posting is reposted? Most often, nothing about you. LinkedIn and Indeed listings expire on a timer and get relisted, applicant tracking systems refresh their feeds, and employers repost when a candidate fell through or the role is an evergreen pipeline. A repost is a signal to check, not a verdict on the role.
How to read a reposted job posting
- Check the board’s expiry. On LinkedIn and Indeed a listing runs for a fixed window, and the employer or its ATS integration relists it when the window ends. A repost there on a monthly rhythm is usually the timer, not a decision. The boards also differ in how they surface it: LinkedIn and Indeed show a fresh posted date, while an ATS careers page usually keeps the original URL and simply keeps serving it.
- Compare the dates. A posted date that keeps moving while the description stays word for word the same is a re-date. Note the first time you saw the posting; that date is the honest age of the role.
- Count the sightings. One repost is noise. A role that comes back three or more times with gaps of ten days or more between appearances is either evergreen or stuck, and both deserve a closer look before you spend an hour on the application.
- Look at the employer’s volume. An employer with hundreds of open roles reposts by policy; a ten-person company reposting one role probably lost a candidate. Same signal, opposite meaning.
- Decide whether to reapply. If you applied and heard nothing, a repost after a candidate fell through is a second chance; reapply with a changed application. If it is a timer repost, your application is still in the ATS and a second one adds nothing. Job closed or expired on Indeed covers the Indeed status in detail.
How common reposts are depends on the board more than on the employer. Boards where roles stay open by design, startup boards and enterprise ATS feeds, tend to sit high; boards that expire listings on a timer tend to sit low.

Where JobsPipe fits
JobsPipe is a jobs data API. It collects live postings from LinkedIn, Indeed, Y Combinator, Naukri, Workday, Greenhouse, Workable, SmartRecruiters, Ashby, Lever and Paylocity, returns them as one schema with closure tracking and a ghost score, and includes a free tier of 1,000 jobs a month at jobspipe.dev. Each record carries discovered_at, the first sighting, next to date_posted, the date the board claims, plus a ghost_score from 0 to 100 that the repost signal feeds. Comparing the two dates is the quickest re-date check: when the claimed date is weeks later than the first sighting, the listing has been relisted. Filtering with max_ghost_score drops the stuck and evergreen roles before anyone reads them.
First sighting, re-dates and reposts on every record. Free tier included.

Should I reapply to a reposted job?
If the repost followed a real event, such as a candidate falling through or the role being reopened after a pause, reapplying with a changed application is worth it. If it is a timer repost on LinkedIn or Indeed with the same text and a new date, your original application is still in the ATS and a second one adds nothing.
Is a reposted job a ghost job?
Not on its own. One repost is usually a listing expiry or an ATS refresh. Three or more sightings with gaps of ten days or more, especially combined with a long open age, no posted salary or an employer with hundreds of open roles, is the pattern that moves a posting into the suspicious range of the ghost score.
How does JobsPipe detect reposts?
Every posting has a crawl sighting log. A posting counts as reposted when that log shows it three or more times with a maximum gap of ten days or more between sightings. The repost signal is one input to the ghost score from 0 to 100 on each record, and max_ghost_score filters on it.
Why do companies repost jobs?
Listing windows on the big boards expire and get relisted, applicant tracking systems refresh their feeds, a chosen candidate declines or fails a check, the role is an evergreen pipeline that stays open by policy, or the requirements changed and the employer wants fresh applicants. The board and the employer's size tell you which is likely.
