What Are Labor Market Trends?

What are labor market trends? The direction of employment, openings, quits, wages and postings, read monthly from statistics and weekly from job boards.

What are labor market trends? They are the direction of the measures that describe hiring: employment and unemployment, job openings, hires and quits, wages, and the volume and skill mix of job postings. Official statistics report most of them monthly with a lag; posting data reads the same movements weeks earlier with less precision.

  1. Start with employment. The headline series are payroll employment and the unemployment rate. In the US they arrive in the monthly Employment Situation report, usually on the first Friday of the month; the UK, the euro area and most other economies publish an equivalent monthly or quarterly release.
  2. Add openings, hires and quits. The US JOLTS release reports job openings, hires, quits and layoffs for a reference month about five to six weeks after it ends. Quits are the confidence measure: people leave voluntarily when they expect to find something better.
  3. Watch wages. Average hourly earnings in the jobs report and the quarterly Employment Cost Index show pay growth. Advertised pay on postings moves first but covers only the share of employers that state a range.
  4. Use postings for the fast read. Posting volume, the mix of occupations and industries, remote share and the skills employers name are visible the week they change. The trade-off is coverage: postings measure demand from employers who advertise, not the whole economy, and each board carries its own mix of them.
  5. Split by occupation and industry. A national number hides opposite moves in nursing and software. Cut every series by occupation and industry before drawing a conclusion; the JobsPipe Labour Market Pulse publishes those shares monthly from live postings.
  6. Respect each source’s lag and revisions. Official series are revised for months after release; posting series are not revised but are noisier. Read them together and expect them to disagree at turning points.

The skill mix is the piece official statistics do not publish at all. Here is what active engineering postings name most often:

  • Communication45.1%
  • Compliance25.2%
  • Leadership24.0%
  • Python19.2%
  • Mentoring15.4%
  • Lean manufacturing13.6%
  • CI/CD13.1%
  • AWS11.5%

Read the bars as a mix, not a ranking of importance. Soft skills such as communication appear across every function, and a hard skill’s share tells you how many engineering postings ask for it, not how hard it is to hire for. A guide to the official and commercial sources, with their release cadence, is in labor market data sources.

Where JobsPipe fits

JobsPipe is a jobs data API that collects live postings from LinkedIn, Indeed, Y Combinator, Naukri, Workday, Greenhouse, Workable, SmartRecruiters, Ashby, Lever and Paylocity, returns them as one schema with closure tracking and a ghost score, and includes a free tier of 1,000 jobs a month. The Insights endpoints under /v1/insights return the occupation, industry and salary shares behind the Pulse, and the same cuts work on the search endpoint through occupation_code_or, isic_division_or, job_country_code_or and posted_at_max_age_days. Each monthly snapshot is archived as a CSV with a stable URL, so a figure you cite stays retrievable. The aggregates are documented on the labour market API page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are labour market trends?

The same thing with British spelling. Labour market trends are the direction of employment, unemployment, vacancies, hires and quits, pay and the mix of advertised roles and skills over time. In the UK the Office for National Statistics publishes a monthly labour market release; posting data adds a faster, noisier reading.

When does labor market data come out?

In the US the Employment Situation report is usually released on the first Friday of the month for the previous month, and JOLTS follows about five to six weeks after its reference month. Schedules shift around holidays, so check the agency calendar. Posting-based series such as the JobsPipe Pulse refresh monthly with no reporting lag.

Are job postings a leading indicator?

They move earlier than official employment series because a posting appears when hiring intent forms, weeks before a hire is counted. They are also noisier: they measure employers who advertise, and boards differ in mix. Read postings for direction and official statistics for levels.
