How Many Companies Use an ATS?

How many companies use an ATS? No census exists. What posting data can show is where postings originate, and board listings are mostly fed from an ATS.

How many companies use an ATS? Nobody knows precisely. There is no census of applicant tracking systems, vendor surveys count their own customers, and analyst estimates disagree with each other. What can be measured is where job postings originate, and that evidence says an ATS sits behind most of the postings you see, including the ones on LinkedIn and Indeed.

How many companies use an ATS: what job postings can measure

  1. Accept that there is no count. Surveys of employers are self-selected, vendor customer lists are marketing, and the answer depends on what you call a company: a ten-person firm hiring once a year has no reason to buy one. Any single percentage you read for ATS adoption is a survey result, not a measurement.
  2. Look at where postings originate. Every JobsPipe record carries sources[0].provider. Seven of the ten collected boards are hosted by an ATS (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workable, SmartRecruiters, Workday and Paylocity); the other three are job boards (LinkedIn, Indeed and Y Combinator). The chart below splits active postings by board of origin.
  3. Remember syndication. A LinkedIn or Indeed listing is mostly created in an ATS and pushed to the board through an integration or a feed, and its apply link often points back at the ATS. So the board share understates ATS use: a large part of the job board postings are ATS postings wearing a different address.
  4. Use the careers page as the tell. A careers page hosted at boards.greenhouse.io, jobs.lever.co, jobs.ashbyhq.com or a myworkdayjobs.com subdomain names the ATS outright. The verified customer lists per ATS on the companies-using pages are built from exactly that check.
  5. Ask about AI separately. Posting data holds no reliable share for AI in hiring. AI shows up as screening and ranking tools inside the ATS, as scheduling and chat assistants, and as AI-written job descriptions, and almost none of it is declared in the posting text. Anyone quoting a precise share of companies using AI in hiring is quoting a survey.
  • LinkedIn48.0%
  • Indeed47.6%
  • Workday1.5%
  • Greenhouse0.9%
  • Workable0.9%
  • Ashby<0.5%
  • Lever<0.5%
  • SmartRecruiters<0.5%
  • Y Combinator<0.5%
  • Paylocity<0.5%

Read as a family split, 4.3% of active postings in the collection sit on ATS-hosted boards and 95.7% on the three job boards. That says how JobsPipe collects, not how employers buy software: the aggregators are crawled broadly, while each ATS board is only crawled for companies already known to use it, so the ATS share here is a lower bound in two separate ways. What an ATS does, and why nearly every employer that hires at volume ends up with one, is in what is an applicant tracking system. Which boards matter most is in what are the top job boards.

Where JobsPipe fits

JobsPipe is a jobs data API that collects live postings from LinkedIn, Indeed, Y Combinator, Naukri, Workday, Greenhouse, Workable, SmartRecruiters, Ashby, Lever and Paylocity, returns them as one schema with closure tracking and a ghost score, and includes a free tier of 1,000 jobs a month. Every record says which board it came from, so the origin split above is one query on jobspipe.dev with source_or per board. Coverage and field quality per board are on the sources page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many companies use an ATS?

There is no reliable count. Surveys give a percentage of the employers they reached, vendors count their own customers, and small firms that hire rarely have no reason to buy one. What can be measured is where postings originate, and most postings, including those on LinkedIn and Indeed, are created in an ATS and syndicated outward.

How many companies use AI in hiring?

Posting data holds no reliable share for it, and any precise figure you see is a survey result. AI shows up as screening and ranking tools inside the ATS, scheduling and chat assistants, and AI-written job descriptions, almost none of which is declared in the posting itself. The honest answer is that it is common and unmeasured.

Are companies using AI in hiring?

Yes, mostly through features their ATS vendors added: resume ranking, knockout screening, interview scheduling, and description drafting. Some large employers run separate screening tools. From the outside the only visible trace is the writing style of some postings, which is not a measurement, so treat claims about adoption shares with caution.

Why do LinkedIn and Indeed postings count as ATS postings?

Because most of them are created in an ATS and pushed to the board through an integration or a feed, with an apply link that often points back at the ATS. The board is the distribution channel, not the origin. That is why the share of postings on ATS-hosted boards understates how many employers actually run one.
