# The best niche job boards in 2026: 18 that work, and why

What niche job boards are, 18 examples by category (remote, startup, tech, AI, web3, design, climate, public sector, academia, nonprofit), how they get their listings, and a data section on what employer-direct ATS postings carry that LinkedIn and Indeed listings do not. Plus how to pick a niche you can actually keep full.

A horizontal job board competes with Indeed and LinkedIn on their own turf and loses. Every job board that actually works is narrow: one role type, one region, one industry, or one community. Narrow is the whole strategy. It concentrates intent, ranks for long-tail queries the giants ignore, and gives employers an audience they cannot buy on a general board. The 18 boards below are worth studying because each one owns a slice completely.

This is the list, grouped by category, followed by the part nobody writes about: where the listings on a niche board come from, what the employer-direct feeds carry that the big boards do not, and how to pick a niche you can keep full.

## What are niche job boards?

Niche job boards are job sites that list roles for one specific audience, defined by profession, industry, location, work style or community, rather than every job everywhere. They win by concentrating intent: a visitor came for exactly that kind of role, so a small audience converts better and employers pay more per posting than on a general board.

## What makes a niche board work

Three things, in order. **Concentration of intent**: a visitor to a climate job board is there for climate roles, so a small audience converts far better than a large undifferentiated one. **Long-tail SEO**: “remote rust jobs” or “climate data scientist” are winnable where “jobs near me” is not. **An audience employers pay for**: a narrow, engaged pool is worth more per posting than a general one. All three depend on the board being full of open, relevant listings every single day.

## Niche job boards examples by category

### Remote

The largest niche and the most crowded. **We Work Remotely** and **Remote OK** are the brand leaders on volume and traffic; **Remotive** leans curated and community-led; **Working Nomads** aggregates and emails a daily digest. What separates them is not the software but how completely each one catches genuinely remote roles, and how fast. Coverage and freshness are the only moat here.

### Startup and early-stage

**Y Combinator’s Work at a Startup** owns early-stage hiring intent, and **Wellfound** (formerly AngelList Talent) remains the default for startup roles at scale. Both win because the audience self-selects for startup risk tolerance, a signal a general board cannot reproduce. The hard part of competing is freshness: startup roles open and close in days.

### Engineering and tech

The monthly **Hacker News “Who is hiring”** thread is the most influential tech job board that is not a job board: thousands of roles, zero structure, and almost nobody parses it well. **Dice** is the long-running tech incumbent, and **Built In** wins on city-level tech communities. A tech board lives or dies on filtering by stack and seniority.

### AI, data and web3

**ai-jobs.net** has quietly become the default for machine learning and data roles. In web3, **web3.career** and **CryptoJobsList** own crypto-native hiring. These verticals reward a board that understands the domain vocabulary, the difference between an MLOps role and a research role, or between a Solidity job and a general backend one, which only clean, well-tagged listings make possible.

### Design, climate and impact

**Dribbble Jobs** converts a design community into a hiring channel. **Climatebase** and **Work on Climate** built the climate-jobs category from scratch and now own it. The lesson is that a strong niche board is often a community with a job board attached, not the other way around.

### Public sector, academia and nonprofit

**USAJOBS** is the federal government’s own board and the cleanest free jobs API anywhere; we cover it in the [USAJOBS API guide](https://jobspipe.dev/sources/usajobs). **HigherEdJobs** owns academic hiring, and **Idealist** owns nonprofit and social-impact roles. Each is a reminder that “niche” can mean an entire sector the general boards serve badly.

## How niche job boards get their listings

Every board on the list fills itself one of three ways, and most use two. **Employers post directly**, which is exclusive and free but has a cold-start problem: nobody posts to an empty board. **Backfill from feeds**, where the board pulls third-party listings from an aggregator API or an XML feed so it looks full from day one; the mechanics are in [job board backfill](https://jobspipe.dev/blog/job-board-backfill). **Scraping the sources**, which gives full control and a permanent maintenance bill.

Where the backfill comes from matters more than people expect, because the same role carries different information depending on which board it was collected from. Postings taken straight from the employer’s applicant tracking system, Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and the like, state a salary and flag remote work far more often than the copies that end up on LinkedIn or Indeed. Across the ten boards JobsPipe collects:

| Board | States a salary | Flagged remote | States a seniority |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Y Combinator | 67.7% | 36.5% | 36.8% |
| Ashby | 56.1% | 24.9% | 39.0% |
| Greenhouse | 46.8% | 15.4% | 38.2% |
| Indeed | 36.8% | 3.9% | 17.9% |
| Workday | 23.3% | 5.6% | 32.9% |
| Lever | 22.7% | 45.5% | 29.6% |
| LinkedIn | 22.1% | 4.3% | 48.6% |
| Workable | 19.6% | 16.7% | 22.3% |
| Paylocity | 10.7% | 2.8% | 7.4% |
| SmartRecruiters | 5.3% | 3.8% | 26.3% |

How this was measured

Measured from active postings per collected board. Generated 2026-09-09. Shares only: JobsPipe publishes percentages, not counts.

Each share is computed within one board, deduplicated by posting. Salary means the posting states a figure or range; remote is the parsed remote flag, not a keyword match. Reproduce any row with `source_or` and a `min_salary_usd` or `remote` filter.

```
curl -X POST https://api.jobspipe.dev/v1/jobs/search \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $JOBSPIPE_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"source_or":["greenhouse"],"remote":true,"posted_at_max_age_days":30,"limit":25,"include_total_results":true}'
```

Read it as a sourcing decision. Y Combinator postings state a salary 67.7% of the time and Ashby postings 56.1%, against 22.1% on LinkedIn. Lever postings are flagged remote 45.5% of the time, against 3.9% on Indeed. A remote board or a salary-transparent board that backfills only from the big two is throwing away the field it is built around. In the API, `source_not: ["linkedin", "indeed"]` keeps only employer-direct postings, and `sources[0].provider` on each result tells you which board it came from so you can attribute and link back.

## How to pick a niche

Good niches have three properties: enough open roles that the board is never empty, an audience that self-selects (a community, a region, a role type, an industry), and employers who would rather reach that audience than post to a general board. Size the niche before you build. Run the filters you would put on the board against a live index and look at the share of postings that survive; if a week of fresh postings in your slice fits on one page, the board will feel empty no matter how good the software is.

Then check that the niche has its own vocabulary, because the vocabulary becomes your filters and your long-tail pages. Job functions with domain-specific skills make better boards than functions whose postings read the same everywhere. Healthcare is the clearest case in the collected postings: the skills named most often are the profession itself, not generic soft skills.

-   nursing43.3%
-   patient-care36.9%
-   cpr31.0%
-   problem-solving8.8%
-   emr8.6%
-   compensation-and-benefits5.9%
-   quality-assurance5.8%
-   organizational-skills5.4%

Share of active Healthcare postings naming each skill, generic soft skills removed. Each bar is a filter a healthcare niche board would need on day one.

How this was measured

Measured from active postings on the ten collected boards within the named job function; share = postings in that function naming the skill. Generated 2026-09-09. Shares only: JobsPipe publishes percentages, not counts.

Skills are the parsed `keyword_slugs` on each posting; soft skills that appear in every function (communication, leadership, mentoring, teamwork, compliance and similar) are excluded from the chart. Reproduce a bar with `skills_or` and `job_title_or`.

```
curl -X POST https://api.jobspipe.dev/v1/jobs/search \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $JOBSPIPE_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"skills_or":["nursing"],"job_country_code_or":["US"],"posted_at_max_age_days":14,"limit":25,"include_total_results":true}'
```

Run the same exercise for the function you have in mind with `skills_or`, `occupation_code_or` for an ISCO-08 occupation, or `isic_division_or` for an industry, and you have both the size of the niche and the filter set. ## The one thing every one of them depends on

Strip away the branding and every board on this list is the same machine: a stream of fresh, open, well-structured listings in one narrow slice. The software is a weekend of work. Keeping the board full, exhaustively, in one vertical, without a full-time scraping team, is the part that decides whether it lives. That is a data problem, and it is the reason most niche boards quietly fill with dead listings and fade. ## Frequently Asked Questions

### What are niche job boards?

Niche job boards are job sites that list roles for one specific audience, defined by profession, industry, location, work style or community, rather than every job everywhere. They win by concentrating intent: a visitor came for exactly that kind of role, so a small audience converts better and employers pay more per posting than on a general board.

### What are the best niche job boards?

The best niche job boards each own one vertical completely instead of competing with Indeed on volume. Remote is led by We Work Remotely, Remote OK, Remotive and Working Nomads. Early-stage hiring belongs to Y Combinator's Work at a Startup and Wellfound. Tech has Dice, Built In and the Hacker News Who is hiring thread. Elsewhere: ai-jobs.net, web3.career, CryptoJobsList, Dribbble Jobs, Climatebase, Work on Climate, USAJOBS, HigherEdJobs and Idealist.

### Why do niche job boards work better than general job boards?

Narrowing concentrates intent, wins long-tail SEO, and creates an audience employers cannot buy on a general board. A visitor to a climate job board is there for climate roles, so a small audience converts far better than a large undifferentiated one. Queries like remote rust jobs are winnable where jobs near me is not, and a narrow engaged pool is worth more per posting.

### How do niche job boards get their listings?

Three ways, usually two at once: employers post directly, the board backfills from an aggregator API or XML feed so it is full before employers arrive, or the board scrapes sources itself. Where the backfill is collected from matters, because employer-direct postings from applicant tracking systems such as Ashby, Greenhouse and Lever state a salary and flag remote work far more often than the copies on LinkedIn or Indeed.

### How do you pick a niche for a job board?

Look for enough open roles that the board is never empty, an audience that self-selects, and employers who would rather reach that audience than post to a general board. Size it before building by running the board's filters against a live index, and check that the niche has its own vocabulary, since domain-specific skills become the board's filters and long-tail pages.

### What is the hardest part of running a niche job board?

Keeping the board full of fresh, open, well-structured listings in one narrow slice. The software is roughly a weekend of work. Sourcing exhaustively in a single vertical without a full-time scraping team, and taking closed roles down, is what decides whether a board lives, which is why most quietly fill with dead listings and fade.
