Is Lightcast legit?
Yes. Lightcast is a legitimate, long-established labor market data company, formed by the merger of Emsi and Burning Glass Technologies, and says it has more than two decades of experience. It has offices in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, New Zealand and India, and sells to enterprises, universities and government agencies. Its data comes from documented sources: online job postings, government statistics and anonymized career profiles.
On provenance, Lightcast describes three families of input. Job postings are collected from thousands of online sources and give the real-time and historical view of skills, salaries and demand. Government statistics supply the slower, big-picture context, and Lightcast extends them with what it calls unsuppression models, which estimate values that official tables withhold for small areas. Professional profile data comes from anonymized online resumes and similar sources. Before anything reaches a customer the company says it resolves duplicate postings, normalises occupations, maps skills to its taxonomy, links records to organisations and validates across sources. Two consequences follow for a careful reader: some published figures are modelled rather than counted, and any postings-based measure reflects what employers choose to advertise online rather than every vacancy. Both are properties of the method, stated openly, not defects.
The same caveat applies to every postings vendor, including JobsPipe. Is it legal to use job postings data collected from the web?
Collecting publicly listed postings is common practice across this industry, but the rules depend on jurisdiction, the source's terms and what you do with the data, so treat it as a question for your counsel.
